Welcoming a newborn into your home is a moment of pure magic—and capturing it with real connection, soft light, and everyday love makes for photos you’ll cherish forever. I recently had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Lucas Family in their home for a lifestyle documentary newborn session.

Baby Steege (yes—they embraced the humor of their last name!) came dressed as a little stegosaurus, bringing a playful and personal touch to the session. Mom and Dad cuddled him on the couch, enjoying soft golden window-light, while I captured the genuine joy, snuggles, and new-family bliss that fill these early days.

The baby’s stegosaurus outfit added a fun, meaningful touch tied to the “Steege” name—creating personality, memory, and charm. Mom and Dad wore soft, neutral tones which allowed the baby and the emotion of the moment to shine. The couch and window light became the perfect backdrop: cushy, familiar, warm. I captured candid moments: Dad whispering to Baby Steege, Mom gently holding his little hands, baby yawning and stretching, the hidden giggles, the relaxed cuddles. The session didn’t rely on heavy props or forced poses—just the family being together, embracing this new chapter.

🏡 How to Prepare for Your Own In-Home Newborn Lifestyle Session

Here are some tips I share with my clients to ensure a smooth, beautiful session:

  • Choose the room with the best window-light (often living room or master bedroom) and open curtains for soft, natural light.
  • Dress in light, neutral colors (creams, soft browns, muted tones) so the baby remains the focus.
  • Keep the atmosphere relaxed—feed and soothe the baby as needed, allow for breaks.
  • Declutter visible backgrounds just enough so the focus stays on your family, not the distractions.
  • Include meaningful touches: a favorite blanket, the couch where you cuddle, maybe a little outfit tied to the baby’s name or personality (like our stegosaurus!).
